What information does anyone have from the club's formation as the Railway Canteen in 1957?
It was originally called the Great Western Railway Staff Association Club (GWRSA) as it was the canteen for railway staff based in Bridgend.
In later years it became Great Western Sports & Social Club (GWSSC) as hardly any many members were British Rail (Great Western Railway) staff and was an established local social hub.
Popular nicknames are The Railway Canteen (not to be confused with Tondu Railway Club), The Shed amongst others.
Names worth a mention are Ben Reffell , Bryn Brunt, Vic the doorman, Gary Dearman (who had three months for telling the committee they were a bunch of ******), Dennis Lang, Cis (Stewardess), Reg & Mona Gunter, Bill Davies (father of our former Chairman), The Leeke family, Gethin Pritchard, "Dominoes can be a vicious game", Tommy Faye (who fixed everyone's car for a drink & bacon roll), Jack Price (remember the Sunday morning nutters club with guess the identity of the person in the coffin on stage, supplied by Johnny The Box - It was Jack). Anyone also remember Bill Perry who drove a blue Austin Marina and crashed it leaving The Caeffatri and was breathalised!
Other Nutters club stunts that go down in legend include the winner of a raffle for a chicken dinner.
The winner did not know that a live chicken had been sedated and placed in a sack, only to be woken and presented to the winner as it flew around the room.
Does anyone remember Buster (the indoor bowls on a Monday Night), Johnny The Box (undertaker), Vic Hillman ( Ivor's Dad singing Old Man River), Mick Coity, Ned Bryant, and not forgetting Mal Williams amongst many.
Have a look at some slide shows below starting with pics from 1988-1990 including club trip abroad.
The second slide show features a charity pool tournament in 1978. Who is the kid in the middle with the Afro hair?
